Week 62: staying in Garanhuns!

image.pngHi guys!!!! So this weekend was transfers and….drumroll… im gonna finish my mission here in Garanhuns!! yay im excited. I didnt want to have to move again haha.
President called on Friday and I thought I was being released as STL (not gonna lie i was a lil excited) but… he told me that Im gonan train again, still being stl. So pray for me plz haha. But im excited! Ill find out who it is tomorrow. Im here in Recife, I got here last night and will go back to Garanhuns on Wednesday.
The best part of this all is that my daughter (missionaries talk like that, daughter, mom grandma, etc.) Sister Mello, who I trained, is also training!!! Its like a father of the bride type situation haha. mother and daughter pregnant  together waiting for their new baby missionaries .

this week was pretty good! We have a lot of people with potential to be baptized, just some of them need to get married!! Were teaching a super cool family that hasnt been to church yet but she PROMISED us she would go next week (We made her sign our planner to promise haha). Theres a less active coming back to church and were teaching his girlfriend, Adriana. Shes soooo cute and super elect. She wants to be baptized but it just depends on how fast they can get married. Marias mom, Ana, is still traveling but when she gets back, shell get married then be baptized!! Maria went out teaching with us this week and she is so cute bearing her testimony. She also got her temple recommend and now is attending institute! So cute!! Im so proud of her.

I dont remember much of what else happened this week. I cant believe its almost May! Ill have 45 mins to talk to you guys.. someone send me a video of brandon when he skypes with you richmonds please!!! Estou morrendo de saudades!!!!

something funny is that now ill meet brandons friend wesley whos coming home from his misison at the end of may! im at his house like almost every day! haha.

Anyways, I love you all! I love this gospel. I know its true because Ive seen it transform lives here in the mission! I wish i could tell all the experiences ive had over email but its just impossible. Someday ill share everything with you guys!

Week 61: Príncipe da paz!!!!

Olá! Tudo bem?
Looks like your Easter was fun! Easter here literally wasnt Easter. Super weird but thats okay. Im looking forward to next year with you all! Bomma and poppas triumph looks so cool! I wanna drive in it with brandon!!!

BDAY shoutouts to 2 of my fav women
Britten (yesterday) and Alicia (friday)!!! I love you guys so much!! you are both so special to me!

This week it started getting cold and rainy in garanhuns!!! I’m using a sweater! First time in almost a year and a half that I dont see my arms. It’s super weird! Its still hot during the day, but at night or early in the morning its rainy and colder. It’s soooo nice. i had forgotten what it was like!!

This week was kinda hard work wise, we only found people super MOLE (mole is like they dont have potential, dont want anything, will never go to church, etc. LAZY!) and so thats annoying. but i thnk this week we’ll find more people. I have faith! All the recent converts are doing so well and that’s what keeps me going honestly! Maria is going to the temple next month with the ward, matheus and mayke also i think. Alex has the priesthood and is doing great, david was confirmed yesterday whch was a relief. He reminds me of Carson. Has the same age. I miss carson!!!!!!! 😦 seems like so long since ive heard from him.. cough cough… hes written me like twice in almost 18 months… cough … )

I LOVE the book of 3rd Nephi. I’m almost finishing the BOM in Portuguese. I like reading in Portuguese, it helps my vocab and stuff. I love reading from chapter 11 on when Jesus Christ was among the people in the Americas. I literally get emotional thinking about how it mustve been to be there. I love in chapter 17 when it talks about how they all kneeled down, including Christ, and he prayed for them. What would it be like to hear Jesus Christ pray for you?! and they didn’t write what he said, they said that itd be impossible to describe! and then i love the part after about him blessing the children
21 And when he had said these words, he wept, and the multitude bare record of it, and he took their little children, one by one, and blessed them, and prayed unto the Father for them.

22 And when he had done this he wept again;

23 And he spake unto the multitude, and said unto them: Behold your little ones.

24 And as they looked to behold they cast their eyes towards heaven, and they saw the heavens open, and they saw angels descending out of heaven as it were in the midst of fire; and they came down and encircled those little ones about, and they were encircled about with fire; and the angels did minister unto them.

25 And the multitude did see and hear and bear record; and they know that their record is true for they all of them did see and hear, every man for himself; and they were in number about two thousand and five hundred souls; and they did consist of men, women, and children.

I love Jesus Christ!!! Literally. Like he is the best. The most perfect example, friend, prince of peace! He gives me peace in the hard times Ive faced on the mission. He will always be there for us. He loves us so much! I know this. I didnt know the exact reason I was going on a mission when I left, but I have stayed and tried my best because I love Jesus Christ and I know He is the Savior of the world and can change lives. He offers forgiveness and love and peace. Everyone needs to grow closer to Him to find true happiness.

Have a good week! Love you all.

Week 60: hi guys!

hi guys!
This week went by soooo fast. we had interviews with president, mission counsel, divisions (we do them every week but i always forget to mention it) so it flew by. I cant believe theres only 3 months left. stoked to see you all!!!

David was baptized on Saturday, but didnt come to church on Sunday to be confirmed. He is a little slow at understanding and thought we meant NEXT Sunday would be his confirmation and not this Sunday. hmm.. we went to his house after and expressed our frustration haha. But something super cute was that we had asked Alex to pass by David’s house before church to go with him, but then Alex arrived at church without David !! I was like what the heck Alex! You didnt bring David?! And i walked away kinda frustrated. so then Alex, all alone without us asking, walked all the way back to David’s house which is far to see if he was there. but he wasnt 😦 but we were so happy that Alex wanted to help. And it was super cool seeing Mayke baptize David! He made a mistake and mixed up the words a few times bc he was nervous, but he did great!.

Maria and thacyla were confirmed yesterday! They also bore their testimonies in sacrament meeting which was precious. They are sooo cute. Maria threw out all her immodest clothes, shes so focused and righteous haha. She already signed up to go to the temple with the ward next month and is super excited!

Elaine from Setubal was also baptized this weekend!! i wish i couldve been there!! remember her? the blackish woman who is super cute and had to get married?!! i was so happy! I hope someone will send me pics

We had interviews with pres on Tuesday then drove with him in his car 4 hours into Recife which was so much better than the bus. it was so fun to talk to him in the car! He is so smart and spiritual and cool!!!

Well thats basically all i have to report. When is mother’s day? itll be fun to skype for the last time!!
love you all!

Week 59: hi!!

Conference was so good. I shouldve actually payed more attention before the mission. Its funny how much we missionaries love it, its like the best day ever. And this year I got to watch IN ENGLISH which was a million times better. Hearing a voiceover of the prophet is super sad haha. I loved all the talks but some of my favorites were:
Dale Renlund! i loved it. I loved how he said that God doesnt leave us because we sin. And Christ is like the good shepard that watches over his “sick” sheep until they get better. I never thought of it like that. Sometimes we think just because we arent perfect, Christ wont be so close to us, but hes always there.
Robert D Hales: we cant be part time disciples. I loved that! Just like we cant be selectively obedient. I have learned on the mission that obedience is sooo important and its what will give us peace and happiness in this life. I wish I would’ve always realized that!
S Mark Palmer- loved it! He talked a lot about love and how love should never be withdrawn when someone fails to live up to our expectations. I need to work on this!
and Joaquin Costa: his talk was sooo good for all the investigators listening! I loved his story!

Maria and thacyla were baptized yesteday in the intermission of the conference. A miracle happened this week. Ana (the gma) decided she wants to be baptized too, so shes going to get married. BUT she said “Maria and thacyla should wait for me to get baptized bc it would be so cool to be baptized all three of us togheter!” My companion and I were like nooooo!!! We could tell that Maria wanted to be baptized sooner, bc marriage takes a month or so here.. We prayed so hard that theyd change their minds. The next morning we went there and maria said she had a surprise for us and that she was gonna be baptized this weekend! Ah. Miracles! It was the most emotional baptism. I was standing in the wing in the bathroom with maria as thacyla was baptized and she was crying so much. After the 2 were baptized, they both said they felt so light and so much better. There’s no better feeling than someone looking at you with tears in their eyes saying you were an angel that God sent to change their lives. I love this family so much! And Duda (the little one with 6 yrs) is sooo cute and she follows me around and is always hugging me. I think im gonna take her home with me!! I know HF was guiding us when we knocked on their door a few weeks ago! Crazy how this all happens. It amazes me!

Theres another 13 yr old, David-that should be baptized this coming Saturday. HF is really blesisng our area!!! Its insane. I know im not even that great and i prob dont teach that well, i have so many things to work on, but im trying super hard and HF is really blessing us for our efforts. We knock so many doors, walk so far, in rain or shine, and the blessings are pouring out! That doesnt mean that when we work hard that we will always be blessed though. I remember in my first area, we worked SO hard and had hardly any success . It was super hard but it taught me patience and dilligence. that even if you dont get blessings immediately, that doesnt mean you can give up and stop working. After the rain comes the sunshine! After the hardship, comes the miracles! Like with Joseph Smith when he was praying and overcome by satan, before he saw God and Jesus Christ, and the story of moses also, before he talked with God face to face. i try to remember that every day.

I received lots of cards this week! Everyone makes fun of me for how many cards i get. They give me a separate envelope wth my name, then one for the rest of my district hahah but i love it so much. thanks so much for the support! I love you guys!

Have a good week! xoxo Sheridan

Week 58: Hi everyone!

Hi everyone
So something cool is that our recent converts are all doing super well. Mayke and Mateus are blessing and passing the sacrament and teaching lessons with us and stuff, and every saturday they go to a mission prep class. Makes me happy!

Mateus is already into like deep doctrine and has been studying about a bunch of stuff. He’s super intelligent.

I finally threw up on the mission 😦 With just 4 months left, i thought id make it, but i thought wrong! On Tuesday we ate lunch, and i felt sick after, super nauseas all day tuesday and wednesday until I couldnt sleep at night. I got up and threw up when everyone was sleeping. It was super sad. If you know me, you know i have a real fear of throwing up, its horrible!!! i felt so alone ahaha i slept on the bathroom floor for a while. but im feeling better now!

We saw a lot of miracles this week. My new comp is awesome, shes a great missionary! We are working super hard and seeing lots of progress in a our area. The Lord helped us find lots of new people this week, which was a huge blessing. We even found 2 families suuuuper elect. One of them, is Ana and her daughter Maria and her granddaughter Thacila. Theyre so awesome!! Totally intelligent and understand our messages and have already prayed and received answers. Maria is obsessed with the BOM. We gave it to her one day, and when we came back the next day, she was already in 1 nephi 12! She loves it. And they came to church on Sunday! They loved it and will totally be baptized. The only problem is Ana isnt married and she lives with a man, so shell have to get married first! But itll all work out.

The other family is a grandma and her 5 grandchildren. They didnt go to church but their baptisms are marked for April 8th! We will follow up with them a lot this week.

I was reading something by Ezra Taft Benson this week that I liked a lot!
He said something like, the Lord operates from the inside to the outside, the world operates from the outside in. The world tries to take people out of the misery of the favelas, Christ takes the misery out of the people and they take themselves out of the favelas. The world tries to change human behavior, Christ changes human nature. Christ changes man, and changed men can change the world.

This week we were teaching in a favela, a single woman who has no education, cant read, has 2 little kids, doesnt work, basically has literally nothing. The favela has been without water for 25 days. I see little kids running around, naked and so dirty like they havent been bathed in months. It breaks my heart. Its so hard to see and act like its normal. Sometimes I wish I could help them more. But something Ive learned on my mission is that we have to help them help themselves. Christ can change them, and they can change their lives. These people dont see the potential that they have! They are all children of God too, so why do they have to suffer so much? I used to think, “Well, they probably made super bad choices, they brought this upon themselves” but now that I have seen these past 14 months the lack of family structure and support here, its clear to see that people really dont know better. They dont have parents or anyone to tell them to stay in school, they dont have anything. They need the gospel sooo much!!

Just someting Ive been reflecting a lot this week. Its from a talk “Born of God” from 1989 if someone wants to read it!

Thats basically it. Alex is gonna be baptized on Saturday! Im excited, the gospel has changed him so much and its been such a special experience to see.

Week 57: so fast!

ok this is gonna be so fast.

were using the computer waiting for our new comps to get here,. mine is sis Bettio from rio grande do sul. Ive talked with her a few times but dont know her super well, just know she was also trained by sis costa!! it was so sad saying bye to sis notice, she cried a lot!! which was shokcing bc she doesnt show emotion usually … So sad

We went to the temple this week which was amazing!! i saw members from Olinda!! Mom please correct my typos!!! sorry im going so fast!!!

Mateus was almost not baptixed bc his mom didnt want him to be, but he showed lots of courage and was baptized! it was so great!!!

I’ll write more next week, im sorry!!! I sent some pics so hopefully you guys can get a better idea from the pics.

love you all!! xoxoxo imageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimageimage

Week 56: tchao Sister Notice:(

So this is gonna be the last week of the transfer, sister notice is headin home to africa!!! I really like her, shes just super calm and funny and weve got along super well. I dont have any idea who could be my new comp. Ill find out on saturday morning!

Happy late bday Ray Richmond!!!! your cake looked so delicious!
Bday shoutouts also to Amber & Ali this week!!! I LOVE YOU!!

This week we did divisions in arco verde which is 2 hrs from garanhuns. I am so tired haha, its tiring being out of your area a lot! on the van ride back there was a drunk old man sititng next to me and every curve we went around he basically fell on me. it was so annoying!! im so sick of drunk people! They just sit in the street all day and drink and yell things at us like “United states!!!” and they try to speak english.
This week well be out of the area again bc we have mission counsel on wednesday, then me and sister notice are gonna go to the temple (yay!)because itll be her last time. They dont have a temple in mozambique. then on thursday we have to go to the airport in recife to renew her visa which she still hasnt done, shes been ilegal here for like 9 months ahhaha.

Mateus is doing well and hell be baptized on saturday! woohoo!
Also, we are praying that Alex will be baptized, that little blesing in our lives :))) he tests my patience. But we really saw a lot of changes in him this week which was so cool. Hes been to church like 4 weeks in a row now, and he said he is working hard to stop drinking coffee, stop doing other bad stuff, and now he stopped playing soccer on sundays. he LOVES soccer. all the boys here are just obsessedwith soccer. And he said hes repenting and evertime he gets frustrated with somene (which is a lot. hes super on edge all the time) he says a prayer and repents. so cute!
Alisson worked a lot this week, and didnt go to church on sunday, so he said he doesnt feel ready to be baptized on the 11th. but we will remark with him.

Theres a girl we found on Alexs street named Ingrid! Shes 25 and super cute and she came to church on sunday! We sent alex to bring her and he did even though he said he didnt want to haha. But she really liked the church and her baptism is marked for the 25th!

I liked a scripture this morning from my personal study in Mosiah 5:13. Its impossible to really know christ if we dont serve him. Pres bigelow said that something that all the missinoaries always say to him is that they dont want to go home from the mission unchanged. and then he said that mission presidents also have that fear. But he said “We have served the Lord for 3 years. Its impossible to not have changed. I know Ive changed.” And i feel like that too. These last 14 months I have really come to know the savior as ive tried to be more like him and I hope i can continue to always know him better through my service to him.
13 For how knoweth a man the master whom he has not served, and who is a stranger unto him, and is far from the thoughts and intents of his heart?

do you guys receive the liahona magazine? on the front cover from this month is a lady we always visited in olinda!! She has parkinsons disease, her name is Gizette. Shes a member but cant leave the house so me and Sister Saad and Sister Mello always visited her and sung hymns with her. Shes so cute.

Thats all for this week!! Carnival is over which is soooo great. Love you guys! xoxoimageimageimageimageimageimageimage
